Corning’s sturdy Gorilla Glass has become popular with phone and tablet makers looking for a scratch and shatter-resistant surface for their mobile devices. Now Corning is getting ready to launch its next version of Gorilla Glass, and this time it will be thinner and more touch sensitive, but just as sturdy.

Corning Gorilla Glass

Corning tells the folks at The Verge that the first devices with Gorilla Glass 2 could start shipping in April or May, although the company won’t name those products or even the manufacturers.

The new glass is 20 percent thinner than the original Gorilla Glass, and the company has been making a habit of showing it off at trade shows by stabbing it and adding weights to make the glass bend.

In other words, it should be able to fend itself when fighting with the keys in your pants pocket — although devices with Gorilla Glass displays have been known to break when dropped directly on concrete.
