As expected, Asus is launching a new 10 inch Android tablet for those that aren’t looking for a 1080p HD display or a premium price tag. The Asus Transformer Pad 300 Series is basically a cheaper version of the Transformer Infinity… and it looks an awful lot like the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime, a $499 tablet Asus introduced last year.

Asus Transformer Pad 300

The  Transformer Pad 300 Series features a 10.1 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel IPS display with 178 degree viewing angles and 10 finger multitouch. It has an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1 GB of memory and 16GB of storage plus 8GB of online storage space.

Like The Transformer Prime and Transformer Infinity, the 300 Series has a high quality 8MP rear camera with auto-focus and an F/2.2 aperture. But I don’t see any mention of an LED flash. The front-facing camera is 1.2MP.

The tablet features 802.11b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth 3.0, has HDMI and SD card ports, and a 22Whr battery for up to 10 hours of run time. If you add the optional keyboard docking station you can get up to 15 hours of battery life.

Asus will offer the Transformer Pad 300 Series in blue, white, and red.

The tablet is a little thicker and heavier than the Infinity series, measuring 10.4″ x 7.1″ x 0.39″ and weighing 1.4 pounds.

There are a few things that seem to set the new 300 Series apart from the original Eee Pad Transformer Prime:

  • The Transformer Pad 300 Series Tegra 3 CPU is clocked at 1.2 GHz instead of 1.3 GHz.
  • Asus offers the Transformer Prime with 32GB or 64GB of storage.
  • The new model is a little thicker and heavier.

Asus hasn’t announced a release date or price for the new Transformer Pad 300.

  1. Except for the Tegra 3, it’s the same as the Transformer I have now.   BTW, no one has yet made comment about the significant bump in WiFi speed with the original Transformer running ICS.  Speedtest.net returns some rather impressive numbers on mine.
