Velocity Micro T507

Velocity Micro has a solid reputation for making decent, affordable, but not particularly spectacular Android tablets. Now the company is unveiling two new tablets which will feature faster processors and newer software than previous models.

The biggest problem with the company’s tablets so far has been that they have shipped with Google Android 2.3 or earlier rather than later versions of Android that had been optimized for tablets. That means they also don’t come with the Android Market preloaded, which makes installing third party apps a little tougher than it would be on an Acer, Asus, Lenovo, or Samsung tablet.

The Velocity Cruz Tablet T507 and T510 will both feature Google Android 4.0, but it looks like they may still ship without the official Android Market. According to the company’s promotional materials, the new tablets will come with the Amazon Appstore instead.

Here’s a run-down of the specs for the new tablets:

Cruz Tablet T507

  • 7 inch capacitive touchscreen display
  • 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor
  • Mali 400 graphics
  • 512MB RAM
  • 8GB storage
  • HDMI output
  • Adobe Flash Player 11
  • Front-facing camera
  • Priced below $150

Cruz Tablet T510

  • 9.7 inch capacitive touchscreen display
  • 0.35 inches thick
  • 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor
  • Mali 400 graphics
  • 8GB storage
  • HDMI output
  • Adobe Flash Player 11
  • Front-facing camera

There’s no word on screen resolution yet, but judging from the photos it looks like the Cruz Tablet T510 will have a 4:3 aspect ratio while the T507 will likely be a widescreen device.

Velicty Micro will show off the new tablets at CES next week. The company is also introducing two other products: a VMUltra Drive which is a USB DVD drive bundled with a 500GB hard drive for netbooks, notebooks, and ultrabooks, and a MicroShine portable projector that weighs just 9 ounces.

  1. They don’t look too bad, but I wonder about the pricing.  I’m pretty excited about CES this year.
