Lenovo IdeaPad S200

Lenovo is updating its IdeaPad S mini-laptop lineup with two new models. Gone are the 10 inch displays of the past, though. Both the IdeaPad S200 and IdeaPad S206 feature 11.6 inch screens and full-sized keyboards, but they measure about 0.8 inches thick.

The S200 model has an Intel Atom dual core processor while the S206 has an AMD dual-core processor.

The new S-series IdeaPads feature solid state disks with support for up to 32GB of storage, up to 4 hours of battery life, and Lenovo’s Quick Start “instant on” software which lets you launch a web browser and a handful of other apps without waiting for Windows to load.

The IdeaPad S200 series notebooks have VGA webcams, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, and optional Bluetooth.

Lenovo will offer the S200 and S206 in grey, white, blue, red, or pink colors.

The laptops will be available in June for $349 and up.

On the one hand, it’s nice to see larger laptops with low price tags and full-sized screens and keyboards. On the other hand, it’s a bit disappointing to see that Lenovo is only promising up to 4 hours of battery life for a portable laptop. Netbooks have been offering more than twice as much run time for years.

  1. ideapad, yes, nice screen, nice keys, nice size, not nice battery life, and not nice touchpad, which is of shiny plastic that must have been tested in air-conditioned labs and not in bus stations and outdoors, cos my finger gets stuck to it, plus can’t have finger on the buttons without moving the cursor! I just found out out that scrolling involves two finger motion which is ok now I know!

  2. I read that some Lenovo notebooks vent the exhausted fan air up through the keyboard.  So I think the s200 will probably do this and not be fanless.

  3. I’ve seen pictures of the S200 from every angle, and I don’t see any fan exhaust vents.  The only vent I see is the one on the bottom.

So it looks to me like this might be a fanless design.  Intel was promising that fanless operation would be possible with Cedar Trail, and it looks like Lenovo delivered.

I have a silent fanless netbook with an ssd now (Dell Mini 10v) running Linux, and it looks like this Lenovo S200 would be a nice and silent upgrade (with my ssd or theirs).

  4. Its really a sad day indeed when someone tells you your notebook can give 4 hours usage. So, in real terms with wifi on, that will work out to 2 hours.

When tablets are giving 10 hours usage, it is no wonder why notebooks are losing its appeal

  5. 11.6″ and only 4 hours of battery life? That’s killing the main advantages of getting an Atom or equivalently powered device.
