Kupa X11

The Kupa X11 is a Windows tablet with a 10 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display, a 1.5 GHz Intel Atom Z670 Oak Trail processor, and up to 10 hours of battery life.

What sets the X11 apart from most entry-level Windows tablets is that it has a capacitive touchscren for finger input and an active digitizer which allows you to write or draw with a digital pen or interact with Windows by hovering the pen over the screen as well as tapping it on the display.

Right now the Kupa X11 ships with Windows 7, but later this year the company will start offering Windows 8 — and this week Kupa is showing off the tablet running an early build of Microsoft’s next-generation operating system.

The tablet has a sturdy, almost industrial design and it’s aimed at mobile professionals. It has a built-in fingerprint scanner for security, for instance.

While I haven’t been impressed with Atom-powered tablets in the past, Windows 8 seems pretty zippy on the tablet. I suspect the active digitizer helps, since it makes navigating Windows apps with a pen almost as easy as it would be with a mouse.

It features WiFi, Bluetooth, front and rear cameras, and 2 full-sized USB 2.0 ports. The tablet weighs a little over 2 pounds.

The Kupa X11 is currently available with a 64GB solid state disk and Windows 7 for $699. Pricing for the Windows 8 model hasn’t been set yet, because Microsoft hasn’t revealed the pricing for the operating system.

  1. This name is so funny if you speak polish. Really shitty name 😀

  2. Fun fact: Did you know that word “kupa” in polish language means heap?

  3. Kupa has had other “X” numbered devices.  There is no ulterior motive with the name.  The only problem with this tablet is the Atom processor. They tend to lag and freeze up at times.  Certainly not as powerful as the Core i5 processor.  You have to be leary of how well it works when they don’t actually do any demos at a normal speed.  They move their fingers across at a snails pace.  Who really navigates that slowly?  Also, I would imagine he’s been demoing the unit all day/week.  Why is the digitizer driver not already installed and calibrated?  This was released months ago, and we’re barely hearing about it now?  Something must not be great about it..or all the tech reviewers would have been all over this.

    1. Could work with metro, but classic desktop would get cramped. And if one is thinking ARM underneath, that is getting very close to WinPhone territory.

  4. Interesting device, but the “X11” runs *Windows*? They’re just looking for laughs from the geeks, right?

    1. Unlikely, but it depends on whether Windows 8 will actually be a game changer or not.

MS is strongly motivated to increase its market share and the plan to date is to get W8 into just about everything from Smart Phones to traditional Desktops. So we’ll see…

For now though it may be too early in the game for a Windows tablet to be successful but not everyone in the world is hooked on just iOS or Android choices and there is a market for those who need to work with desktop OS and even legacy programs.

    2. My thoughts exactly. What next? Tablets named “LibC”? “Gnome”? …although I’d have to be interested in a tablet named “The Gimp”!
