Classpad

The Indian government introduced a $35 tablet in 2011, aimed at students in the rapidly developing nation. Recently a slightly more advanced version of the Aakash tablet went on sale for about $45, and people have been signing up for pre-orders like nobody’s business.

But it looks like the Aakash tablet from DataWind isn’t the only game in town. A Delhi-based company called Classteacher Learning Systems is launching a new line of tablets called the Classpads.

Prices will run between $140 and $260 or so, which makes these devices much more expensive than the Aakash tablets. But the Classpad tablets will come in 7, 8, and 10 inch sizes and offer capacitive touchscreens, 1.3 GHz processor, and 4GB to 8GB of storage. The Aakash has a resistive touch display, a slower processor, and just 2GB of storage.

If the Classpad looks familiar, that’s because it appears to be nearly identical to a Coby Kyros tablet. Instead of a Coby label though, the Classpad tablets have Classpad stickers on the back.

While Coby’s tablets aren’t exactly top of the line, they feature better specifications and build quality than many of the low-cost tablets we’ve seen over the past year or two, and it looks like the Classpad may be a slightly better option than the Aakash tablet for Indian students and schools that can afford the more expensive devices.
