Chinese electronics maker Smart Devices has introduced a new tablet with a 1 GHz TI OMAP 4430 dual core processor, a 9.7 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel IPS display and Google Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
It’s sort of like what you would get if you crossed an Amazon Kindle Fire (CPU), iPad (screen size), Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (screen resolution) and threw in a little ice cream for good measure.
The tablet has front and rear cameras, Bluetooth 4.0, and Power VR GX540 graphics. It’s is also pretty darn cheap, running about 1699 yuan, or roughly $268 US.
According to Engadget Chinese, Smart Devices is also working on a more powerful model called the T20 which will have a 1.5 GHz or 1.8GHz processor.
I doubt we’ll see this particular tablet distributed widely outside of China anytime soon, but it’s nice to see a cheap Chinese tablet with decent specs.

This tablet has been “introduced” …as in “this is our next tablet coming out in 2012”. It is not on the market yet, so you’re looking at a prototype. Â
SmartQ has never made a device with a Freescale chipset. Mr. Cabron above is incorrect. They’ve used Amlogic, Samsung, and way back when, ADI.
SmartQ isn’t perfect, but they do release regular firmware updates. The original T10 released last spring has received five updates and is currently on Android 2.3.4.
4:3 ratio doesn’t agree with 1280×800…
I’ve had a SmartDevices device before and it did have decent hardware build quality… But it definitely was “cheap” and pretty buggy (though they did release some updates).
I do believe that they can achieve the quoted price though. They’ve been doing cheap stuff with near-decent specs for years now.
It looks like they shoehorned this into the old tablet they used to tout with the freescale chip set in it. I don’t believe the 9.7″ 1280×800 resolution as that device appears to have a 4:3 ratio, and Chinese companies are notorious for massaging their specs. I’d say it’s pretty sketchy to jump on the 4.0 bandwagon with china branded tablet. The Ainol device is calling their build “alpha” which is code for “chock full of bugs”
1280×800 is 16:10. 4:3 would be 1200×800 but why do we care about those details?
That cpu is also used in the Archos G9 devices.
