HP TouchPad Go

HP never got around to releasing the TouchPad Go before discontinuing its webOS hardware division this summer. But the company did produce a handful of prototypes of the HP TouchPad’s little sibling, and the folks at webOS Nation managed to get their hands on one.

They’ve posted a detailed review of the tablet. It paints a portrait of a pretty good, but not perfect product. While most product reviews arm you with the information you need to make wise purchasing decisions, odds are you’ll never have to decide whether to buy a TouchPad Go. It’s simply not available. Instead the review provides a glimpse of what might have been.

Long story short, the HP TouchPad Go has a 7 inch, 1024 x 768 pixel display and a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual core processor. It’s smaller and lighter than the 10 inch TouchPad that did go on sale, and it has a faster chip. The screen resolution is the same, which means text and graphics actually look sharper on the smaller display.

Unfortunately the cameras aren’t very good, the tablet is kind of chunky, and there just aren’t as many third party apps available for webOS as Android or iOS. Ultimately while webOS Nation seems to like the TouchPad Go, they don’t seem convinced that this device would have fared any better in the market than the 10 inch HP TouchPad.

The HP TouchPad did actually become pretty popular after HP canceled the product. But that’s only because the company dropped the based price from $499 to $99 in order to liquidate remaining inventory.
