Asus U32U

Asus is apparently working on a new 13.3 inch laptop with a 1.65 GHz AMD E-450 dual core processor and Radeon HD 6320 graphics. Blogese reports it’s called the Asus U32U and it’s expected to ship early next year for $449 and up.

Update: The Asus U32U is now available in some regions.

The AMD E-450 chip falls somewhere between what you’d expect from a netbook processor and a full-blown laptop or desktop chip. It has a TDP of 18W, which allows you to get better battery life than you’d see from a computer with a more powerful AMD processor.

But the AMD E-series chips can run circles around Intel Atom processors, which means that if you don’t need a bleeding edge device, you may be able to use a computer like the Asus U32U as a primary computer.

The base model of the new laptop will have 2GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, a 1366 x 768 pixel display, USB 3.0, HDMI, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, and a 5600mAh battery which may be able to provide up to 12 hours of battery life.

Asus is no stranger to the ultraportable space. The company was a pioneer in the netbook space and the new Asus Zenbook UX21 and UX31 notebooks are two of the first ultrabooks to hit the market. The Asus U32U looks like a product that’s designed to fit squarely in between those two extremes.

It’s more powerful than a netbook and less powerful than an ultrabook — but it’s designed to be more affordable than any ultrabook.

  1. Now available in Cochin,Kerala,India from ITNEt Infocom at 28500..amazingbuild quality

  2. Dunno, but it sounds like it will be going head-to-head with the Lenovo X130e, albeit with a slightly larger form factor (13.3 inch instead of 11.6 inch).

    1. A modern Core i-series laptop like the U24E is still multiple times more powerful than either AMD Fusion or Intel ATOM.

AMD Fusion is basically just their answer to Intel ATOM for the low end, designed for affordability, PC market.

Clock for clock the Bobcat cores are much more efficient than Intel ATOMs for processing power but ATOM solution still consumes less power and generates less heat.

So AMD usually clocks them lower to compensate and if that results in a few hundred MHz advantage for a Intel ATOM then it pulls ahead and that’s the case for the lower end Ontario chips.

While the newer Cedar Trail chips will be offering higher clock speeds, especially in the mobile offerings, to help close the gap and that means aside from being a little better at multi-tasking that the real advantage for AMD Fusion is that they are coupled with a more powerful GPU than Intel provides the ATOM.  Though that’s also part of the reason AMD Fusion still consumes more power than a Intel ATOM solution.

Meaning the main reason to choose a AMD over a ATOM is the much greater graphical performance, which Intel would need to add a discrete graphic solution like Nvidia ION to compete, but Intel ATOM still offers better run times.

Though Cedar Trail does double to triple the GMA performance of the Intel ATOM and that may be good enough for most as it allows for full HD video and playing of old games.  While the AMD Fusion GPU is closer to what you can expect from a entry level gaming graphics card.

So depends what you value more for which you would want.  Both should provide more run time than a Core i-Series laptop however and both should also be noticeably cheaper as well.
