Amazon Kindle family

Amazon is already shipping the Kindle Fire tablet and tomorrow the Amazon Kindle Touch eBook Reader will begin shipping to customers. The Kindle Fire had been scheduled to start shipping tomorrow, while the Kindle Touch ship date was initially set for next week.

The $200 Kindle Fire features a 7 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel color display, a 1 GHz TI OMAP4 dual core processor, 8GB of storage and runs a modified version of Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread. But those aren’t the specs Amazon really wants you to focus on.

Instead, Amazon is pointing out that customers will be able to purchase and read millions of eBooks, access 17 million songs from Amazon MP3, or purchase or rent 100,000 movies and TV shows, and access hundreds of magazines, newspapers, and digital comic books.

The Kindle Fire is already getting mixed, but mostly positive reviews. If Amazon were charging $500 for the tablet, I suspect that technology journalists would treat it a little more harshly — but at $199 it sounds like a pretty nifty media consumption device.

I have a Kindle Fire on order, but I haven’t received confirmation that it’s shipping yet. I didn’t place my order on launch day, but I’m hoping to get my hands on the tablet sometime this week.

Amazon’s Kindle Touch is the first eBook reader from Amazon with a touchscreen E Ink display. It runs $99 for a model with advertisements on the screen saver, but you can disable the ads by paying $40 for an upgrade — or by completely powering down the eReader when you’re not using it.

I’m not surprise to see Amazon move up the ship date for the Kindle Fire. The Barnes & Noble NOOK Tablet will go on sale for $249 later this week.

You can purchase the Amazon Kindle Fire from Amazon for $199.

The Kindle Touch starts at $99.

The Kindle Touch 3G also ships this week, for $149.
