Motorola XOOM

Motorola has released its latest earnings data, and in the third quarter of 2011 the company shipped about 11.6 million mobile devices. That includes 4.8 million smartphones, but just 100,000 Motorola XOOM tablets.

That number seems a bit low… but it’s really for Motorola to decide whether the XOOM is a success or failure. The company reportedly sold 440,000 tablets during previous quarter, so there’s a fair number of devices in the wild, but it sounds like the XOOM is losing steam or having a hard time fending off competition from similar tablets from Samsung, Acer, Asus, Lenovo, and others.

No company has produced an Android tablet which has been competitive with the Apple iPad yet. Apple has sold millions of iPads each quarter since launching the first iPad in 2010.

Motorola is already working on next-generation XOOM tablets. We’re expecting to see new models with 10 inch and 7 inch displays soon.

  1. I hope they keep making tablets.  I have a Xoom and it’s a great device.  It’s heavy compared to the iPad2 and Galaxy Tab but not so heavy that it’s a burden.  I’m looking forward to seeing the Xoom2.
