CyanogenMod 7.1 on the HP TouchPad

The CyanogenMod team has released a second alpha version of Android for the HP TouchPad tablet. Alpha 1 was released less than a week ago, and it was pretty functional — but included a number of bugs that could cause the tablet to crash, the WiFi to disconnect, or other problems.

Alpha 2 is still rough around the edges, but it includes a number of new features and improvements. Here are some of the highlights:

  • The battery drain issues have been partially fixed so the battery should last longer, especially when the TouchPad is idle.
  • The Android Market fix has been incorporate so that if you install the gApps package you should see most available apps in the Market.
  • WiFi should no longer disconnect when you resume from sleep.
  • The speaker should turn off when you plug in headphones.
  • The ACMEInstaller app should work better.
  • There’s now an ACME UnInstaller app if you want to completely remove Android and restore your original webOS media partition to its original size.

You can install CyanogenMod 7.1 Alpha 2 the same way as Alpha 1. Just grab the latest CyanogenMod build from the links in the RootzWiki forum and follow our step-by-step instructions. Or if you’re upgrading from Alpha 2, check out our upgrade instructions.

The latest ACMEInstaller and Uninstaller are also available from the same RootzWiki thread.

  1. I have the CM7 HP Touchpad and while experimenting with the lockscreeen functions, I have inadvertently locked myself out of the tablet.  My TP is stuck on the main screen and offers no response when I touch any of the on-screen icons.  I have already tried reinstalling Android but the problem persists.  Any advice would be helpful.  Thanks!

  2. do you have to wipe everything from the touchpad in order to do this install?

  3. I added liliputing to my tech news feeds along with engadget, cnet , etc just for your HP touchpad coverage.. Thanks for the coverage.

  4. Going to echo what Jared said and thank you for the coverage as well. Surprised they’re still calling this an Alpha, well I was surprised the first one was an Alpha as well. While it certainly isn’t completely stable these are at least beta quality.

Looking forward to see what they can do with ICS after seeing how well they made Gingerbread work.(yes I know, no ETA’s)

    1. They won’t start work on Ice Cream Sandwich until the source code is released… so while you might star to see ICS custom ROMs for some other devices based on the Android 4.0 SDK it will likely be a little longer before CyanogenMod starts work on any ICS versions.

But glad you’re enjoying the TouchPad coverage. Now if you’ll excuse me a moment, I’m going to try out the new alpha, the uninstaller, and a few other things. More updates soon. 🙂

  5. Thank you for covering all of this touchpad jazz. Extremely helpful. This is now one of the first sites i check for cmtouchpad updates. Much appreciated.
