Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Asus is set to launch an updated Eee Pad Transformer tablet on November 9th. Chairman Jonney Shih flashed the new device at a conference recently, but we hadn’t gotten a good look at it… until now.

Photos uploaded to a Chinese forum give us a much better idea what the new Eee Pad Transformer Prime will look like. The photos have since been deleted, but Notebook Italia grabbed some copies.

Like the original Transformer, the new Prime’s key feature is support for an optional laptop dock that lets you use the tablet as if it were a laptop computer. The dock includes a full sized keyboard, a touchpad, expansion ports, and an independent battery which allows the Transformer to run longer when docked than it would if you were only using the tablet.

The new dock has an updated keyboard layout and the buttons below the touchpad have been integrated into the touch area itself.

The Transformer and keyboard dock both have a new brushed aluminum look which makes the device look a bit like the new Asus Zenbook line of ultrabook laptops.

The tablet still has front and rear cameras, but the camera on the back now has an LED flash.

Asus has already confirmed that the new tablet will have an NVIDIA Kal-El quad-core processor and measure less than 0.33 inches thick. We should know more about the tablet in a few weeks.

  2. i’m hoping this darn thing just gets released and prices start to fall. I was just looking for one of these types of devices for a comic reader i’d get the kindle fire but to me 7′ doesn’t cut it it is like reading a digest sized comic. I wanted the touchpad but not at the scalper price point.

  3. I noticed no mention of Android in your post.  Hopefully, Asus decided to go with something of higher quality this time around.

    2. Since they’re updating the original to Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) it’s expected that the Prime will be released with ICS.

      For ARM tablets right now there isn’t really any viable alternative OS for a mainstream product besides Android…  At least nothing that isn’t experimental or less established than Android is right now, and we’re still a year away from Windows 8 official release.

      However, while the Tegra 3 is still a Cortex A9 based 40nm SoC, and not a next gen Cortex A15 28nm like those coming out next year, it already is compliant with the specs needed to run a desktop OS like Windows 8. 

      So as long as Asus allows the boot loader to be unlockable then it should be relatively easy to put a port of linux onto it for those who want something besides Android.

      1. It’s not sure it will be released with ICS, but my sources say that if it won’t, the update will be available by early December.
