Archos 35 IT

Archos has added yet another member to its growing family of Android-powered tablets and portable media players. The Archos 35 IT showed up at French retailer Fnac recently for just under 100 Euros, or about $134 US.

The little tablet has a 3.5 inch, 272 x 480 pixel display, 4GB of storage, an 800 MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor and runs Google Android 2.2 Froyo. It looks like a slightly larger version of the Archos 32 tablet which was released last summer, and appears to be part of the Archos Gen8 lineup rather than the company’s new Gen9 product line.

Gen9 devices including the new Archos 101 and Archos 80 have faster processors and run Google Android 3.2 Honeycomb.

Still, for about 100 Euros, the Archos IT looks like a decent little upgrade from the Archos 32. In addition to the slightly larger display the new model has a built-in speaker, whereas its predecessor only had a headphone jack.

Like most Archos tablets, the new device supports a wide range of audio and video formats including H.264, MP4, MP3, AAC, FLAC, and OGG Vorbis.

Unfortunately the Archos 35 IT does not come with access to the official Google Android Market. Instead it ships with the AppsLib app store, although you can probably install the Amazon Appstore, SlideMe, or other third party app marketplaces if you want a wider selection of applications. Or if you want to live on the edge, you can install an unofficial, hacked version of the Android Market.

  1. Of all the Android tablets I’ve owned, I’ve been the happiest with my Archos 32.  It’s replaced my iPod Touch as my primary media player.  Reading books on it, using the Kindle app is actually pretty decent as well.  Having a version with a larger screen should only be a benefit.

I’ve really enjoyed owning both the Archos 32 and the Archos 70 but I recently sold my A70.  Even though it was an excellent tablet for e-book reading and media consumption, the drawing and music creation apps just didn’t live up to variety and quality of Apple’s iOS devices.  Having these kinds of apps is less of a priority on the A32, so I’ve kept it and am very happy with it.

    1. Looks like they’re still using a resistive screen but unlike many other companies Archos usually does a good job optimizing responsiveness for a resistive screen and is harder to tell it apart from how a capacitive would work for you.

However, Archos hardware does have it’s faults though.  My experience with a A70 for example, after just under a year of use, is run time now less than a hour, TS keeps losing calibration, screen rotation keeps getting stuck, edge of TS less responsive and forces me to use in portrait mode for more consistent usage, and the kick stand hinge pin popped out just recently.

Though of course everyone’s experience will be different but for the price you shouldn’t expect too much. But it was good when new…  While smaller models should be more durable and Archos has more years of experiencing at designing PMP’s anyway.

Mind though Apple is lowering the base price of their iTouch to $199 now and other similar products are starting to show up.  So there are more choices coming…

  2. 99 euros is the same as $99 because in Europe we always include 25% tax in pricing. And as you write, installing Google Marketplace on Froyo devices is a piece of cake. This device is just to make things easier and simpler for Archos in the ipod touch killer front.
