Acer Aspire S3

The Acer Aspire S3-951 is the company’s first ultrabook. It’s an ultraportable laptop with a 13.3 inch display that weighs just under 3 pounds and measures less than 0.7 inches thick. It will go on sale in the US and Canada later this week for $899.

Intel coined the word “ultrabook” this summer to describe a new class of thin and light computers with the latest Intel processors. Asus is expected to launch its first entries into this space at an event in New York tomorrow, but it looks like Acer has beat Asus to the punch.

Acer first unveiled the S3 laptop in September. Now we have detailed specifications for the computer:

  • 13.3 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display
  • 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5-2467M processor
  • Intel HD Graphics 3000
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
  • 4GB of DDR memory
  • 20GB SSD (for fast boot performance)
  • 320GB hard drive (for data storage)
  • 802.11b/g/n WiFi
  • Bluetooth 3.0
  • 1.3MP camera
  • 2 USB 2.0 ports
  • HDMI port
  • SD/MMC card reader
  • Headset jack
  • 3 cell, 3280mAH battery
  • 12.6″ x 8.5″ x 0.7″
  • 2.98 pounds

Acer says the laptop will get up to 6 hours of battery life under continuous use — and up to 50 days of standby time. The company also says the laptop can resume from sleep in less than 2 seconds — although if your computer is in standby for more than 8 hours it will switch to Deep Sleep mode, which takes 6 seconds to wake up from.

The computer also uses Acer’s “Instant Connect” technology to connect to the internet in 2.5 seconds.

While it won’t be the only ultrabook hitting the streets this fall, Asus, Lenovo, Toshiba, and other companies all seem to be putting their own distinctive finishes on their new ultraportable notebooks. The Acer Aspire S3 has a magnesium aluminum alloy case with a metallic finish, a touchpad with an integrate click area, and a power button located on the hinge.

  1. This is a very impressive machine for the price.  And very impressive that they managed to squeeze in a conventional hard disk in there.  I wonder if the hard disk is is a standard 2.5 inch laptop hard disk or if it’s a special reduced-size disk.

I would also like to see an 11″ version of the same; though, at that size, it may be impossible to have a standard hard disk, necessitating a larger SSD (which will make the computer more expensive)
