Ubuntu 11.10 beta

Canonical has released the first beta version of Ubuntu Linux 11.10. The full version of the next-generation operating system is due out next month, but if you’re looking for something a little more stable than the recent alpha builds to test on your computer (or virtual machine), you can grab the beta from the Ubuntu Wiki.

There are a number of visual tweaks in the latest version of Ubuntu including the ability to hide window controls when you maximize a window in order to save space. The Ubuntu Software Center has a new look, and the Unity 2D user interface for computers with older or less powerful graphics cards now looks a little more like the Unity 3D environment.

The folks at Web Upd8 have put together a video showing some of the new features in Ubuntu 11.10 beta. You can check it out below.

  1. Although I prefer Gnome Classic for now, it seems the Unity is developing at a rapid pace.

I might give Unity a shot in one or two releases.
