Microsoft’s SkyDrive service offers users 25GB of free online storage space for just about any type of file. That number hasn’t changed since 2008, but it’s still more free storage than most of Microsoft’s competitors offer. But now the company is getting ready to remove the limit altogether… for some file types.
LiveSide reports that Microsoft will soon let users store an unlimited amount of Office documents and an unlimited number of photos on SkyDrive. Everything else will still be limited to 25GB.
File stored in your SkyDrive can be accessed from any computer with a supported web browser, or from a Windows Phone 7 mobile device. But there are some limits to the service. You can’t store files that are larger than 50MB, for instance, which means that you can’t upload your entire movie collection and stream it over the web.
Microsoft is expected to expand access to SkyDrive to add support for iOS, Android, OS X, and other platforms, and the unlimited storage for photos and documents could be a major selling point for the service. The company’s two largest competitors in this space (Google, and Apple) both offer a limited amount of storage space for free, and charge customers an annual subscription fee if they need additional space.
Good for Photo backup!!
