If you were hoping to pick up a netbook with a shiny new Intel Atom Cedar Trail chip for Christmas, you might have to wait until next year’s holiday. Netbook News reports Intel mentioned at the IDF conference this week that its new Cedar Trail platform is on track to launch by the end of the year, but that we probably won’t see Cedar Trail products in time for the holiday season.

That either means that the chips will go out to manufacturers by year’s end, but we might not actually see computers shipping with the chip until early next year, or that devices could ship in later December… by which time many people will have already finished their holiday shopping.

The Cedar Trail platform will succeed Intel’s Pine Trail platform which covers the Atom N450 through N475 single core chips and Atom N550 and N570 dual core processors. The new chips will be significantly more powerful than the low power, tablet-friendly Oak Trail chips Intel launched this summer, and will likely be found in next generation netbooks.

Cedar Trail chips will be able to support 1080p HD video, Blu-ray decoding, and HDMI and DisplayPort output. They’ll also include built0n support for Intel Wireless Display and Wireless Music technology, and Intel has updated the spec sheet to include a few new features including Rapid Start and Smart Connect.

The Rapid Smart feature allows a computer to resume from hibernation more quickly and connect to the internet in just a few seconds.

Smart Connect allows computers to connect to the internet occasionally even when the computer is in sleep mode so that you can receive notifications when you receive new messages via email, Twitter, or other apps. Smart Connect brings some of the “always-on” capabilities we’ve come to expect from phones and tablets with ARM-based chips to Intel powered devices.

  1. Who cares we have AMD’s updated FUSION processors just updated with turbo both E-450 and the C-60 are looking pretty sweet….the C-60 is looking particularly good given the turbo works on both the CPU & GPU.
