Slick ER-701

Budget electronics maker Slick is preparing to launch a new eBook Reader called the ER-701. It showed up at the FCC website this week, and you can find the user manual (PDF link) at the Slick support site.

The company already offers an eReader called the Slick ER-700. It’s a cheap eBook reader with a 7 inch color LCD display. It’s designed to work with Kobo‘s digital bookstore, but while most eReaders with E Ink displays including the Kobo Touch typically sell for over $100, the ER-700 is available for as little as as $80.

There aren’t many details available about how the new model will differ from the ER-700, but the user manual shows that the buttons have all been moved from the bottom of the device to the right side. The ER-701 user manual also shows a video player — but the company’s original eReader also had a video player, it just didn’t include any documentation for that feature.

The device appears to have a 2100mAh, 7.77 Whr battery.

The Slick ER-701 eReader isn’t going to offer the super-long battery life that you get from a model with an E Ink display, and it will be harder to read in direct sunlight. It doesn’t appear to have a touchscreen and the user manual makes no mention of WiFi — although the fact that I found the eReader on the FCC website seems to suggest it could have some sort of wireless capability.

But if the company’s first model is anything to go by, the new Slick eReader will likely have one thing going for it: a low price.

  1. Bought the Slick ER701 on clearance at Shopko for $40. Worst $40 I’ve ever spent. Won’t stay charged. The user guide is a 4-ft x 3-ft roadmap that you unfold and can’t even hold in one hand. Half the pictures in the user guide don’t even look like what comes up on my computer screen. Managed to buy 1 book for $8 that won’t sync to the e-reader, so I have to read it on my computer. Store won’t let you return electronics that have been opened unless you want to exchange for the same thing. Forget that!

  2. How do you get the case open without destroying the unit. Previous e book readers from China that I have had used two micro screws in the back cover to hold it together.

  3. Kobo 701 regular price 149.99 at Shopko. BF sale was 50.00. Features: color, high-resolution display, 2GB memory holds up to 2,000 books and expandable up to 30,000 books. Micro SD card slot for additional storage Supports ePub, PDF and TXT files. Stores and plays music, pictures and video. Listen to music while reading. USB 2.0 connection rechargeable baterery and 4.99 gets you service coverage for two years. Looks good but haven’t tried it. It’s a gift.

  4. I’ve got the Slick ER 701 up and running and must say, so far, love it. Great display and comfortable to handle. KOBO is easy to manage, also.

Unless I run into problems, I highly recommend this reader. I have owned Cybooks and ebookwise 1150s in the past. The cost of the Slick, at $60, is 1/6 of what I paid for my Cybook several years ago.

    1. I just bought one, fully charged it and it worked for about an hour and then went black and now will not do anything. Never did show the screen to sign up for Kobo account. Not sure what to do now??

  5. We have them at dollar general, for around $60. I found it with our x-mas electronic stuff we get every year and decided to research the product and im not finding really anything about it

    1. Thanks, DG. I got your email and bought on at a local Dollar General here in Amarillo. I am currently charging it. The device looks like it is of really high quality. Btw, manufacturer sells it for $88 and Sears will sell for $68 so, you have a very good price. I have owned various ebook readers for years – it will be interesting to see how this fares against the others – again, Thanks!

      1. I bought mine at DG for $50, on sale On Thanksgiving. They won’t let me return it there because I had opened it:(

  6. Well, I would like to get the 701 but am tired of waiting and can’t really get any answers from Southern Telecom so am purchasing a Nook Color today.

  7. Im confused, will the ER701 have Wi-fi, or not? I’m hoping when I get mine, that I can browse the kobo ebookstore and buy ebooks right on the device. Oh, and I saw this ereader at CES 2011 and i’m wondering what happened to it. It was a white kindle clone ereader from Slick. Here’s what it looks like..

    1. This particular company usually doesn’t state anything except what video and audio formats it can work with but the previous 700 model worked with ePub, could read PDF but had lousy reflow, and some said they got Mobi and txt working on it as well.

So this new model should be similar and you can check the Kobo ebook store to see what formats they sell…
