Qualcomm Snapdragon roadmap

Chip maker Qualcomm has unveiled a new, simpler naming system for its low power smartphone and tablet chips. Gone are confusing names like MSM8x55 and now we have the Snapdragon S1, S2, S3, and S4.

All you really need to know is that the higher the number, the more powerful the chip.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 basically covers last year’s products with clock speeds up to 1 GHz and Adreno 200 graphics processors.

The company’s current single core chips fall under the Snapdragon S2 category, with Adreno 205 graphics and clock speeds up to 1.4 GHz and support for stereoscopic 3D graphics.

Snapdragon S3 chips include current top-of-the-line processors including the 1.2 Ghz and 1.5 GHz dual core processors we’re starting to see in phones and tablets with Adreon 220 graphics.

Next up we’ll see the S4 chips which are due out before the end of the year. These processors will range from single to quad core chips with support for 1080p HD graphics, stereoscopic 3D, and optional 4G LTE mobile broadband support.
