Computer accessory maker Logitech has introduced a new wireless mouse designed to work with tablets running Google Android 3.1. And it looks like a fine little portable Bluetooth mouse. There’s just one thing you should know before deciding whether to buy it: There’s nothing stopping you from using virtually any other PC mouse with an Android tablet. Aside from marketing, there’s really nothing special about the Logitech Tablet Mouse.

While Google’s Android operating system was initially designed for for finger input, Google added support for USB peripherals in Android 3.1. That means you can plug in virtually any USB mouse, keyboard, or game controller and use it with Android tablets running the latest version of the operating system.

The operating system also now shows an on-screen cursor when you connect a mouse, which means you can scroll through content or use a mouse to point-and-click just as you would on a desktop computer running Windows, Linux, or OS X. So while the Logitech mouse connects to a tablet or other device over a Bluetooth wireless connection instead of a USB connection, it works like any other mouse once you pair it with your tablet.

The Logitech Tablet Mouse runs on 2 AA batteries and comes with a protective pouch. Oh yeah, and Logitech is selling the same mouse without the Android branding for $40.

  1. Technically speaking, Android got keyboard and storage support with 3.0. I think basic mouse support have been in existence since the 1.x days, tho 3.1 may have tweaked the behavior a bit.
