Update: It was good while it lasted. It appears the promo codes expired less than a day after they were offered.

As if scoring an extremely capable tablet for $99 wasn’t a good enough deal, those of you who recently picked up an HP TouchPad now have the chance to download six free apps from the webOS App Catalog. Right now, you can pick up the slick news reading app Glimpse, Audobon Birds, Camera for TouchPad (which make a nice one-two punch for nature lovers), the Kung Fu Panda 2 Storybook (perfect for those with youngsters), and two games: Sparkle HD and Big Boss.

Right now the promo codes posted are only valid in the U.S., but HP promises international codes will be added to the post soon.  The apps and games total just over $30 in value, but there’s more. You’ll also get at least one more pack of six free apps. According to the HP blog post, a second pack will be unveiled in September.

With the fire sale pricing and these app giveaways, the TouchPad’s popularity has skyrocketed. Let’s hope someone decides to jump on the opportunity to license the OS and throw it on some ARM hardware and get more webOS tablets on the market at low prices. Clearly the public is interested.

  1. Although the promo codes have expired, HP still has the offer up. You have to enter each one separately to find out it isn’t available. I called HP support and asked why the still have the offer up if the apps aren’t to be gotten: they said the offer goes through Aug. 31, and their rule is it has to say up, even though you can’t get the apps.

  2. Gemaster may have purchased a TouchPad with the hope that an Android version will become available, but I doubt that tens of thousands of people did.  My newly purchased TouchPad works fine as a web browser and text editor, running WebOS.  True multitasking is a welcome bonus. Upgrading to WebOS 3.0.2 made a big difference in the tablet’s responsiveness.

If and when an Android version for TouchPad hardware becomes available, I’d consider switching if it supported the use of an external GPS liked via Bluetooth.

Does this mean I will be able to stream something via Flash in the background while reading an ebook? I never could do that with Android.

I am curious to see the adequacy of the available pdf reading apps. I am accustomed to using EZ-PDF on Android, which may be reason enough for me to switch.

  3. I would suggest a majority bought the TouchPad with the expectation of Android. Want to see WebOS die quickly? Release the Android mod for the TouchPad and it’s over. It’s done. WebOS will not survive that. An Android player is the only hope HP has in keeping WebOS alive. They should be going stealth and trying to make that happen before Android is able to overwrite their OS.

Personally I’m not killing the WebOS on this yet. I’m waiting it out for ice cream sandwich. I’ll milk the freebies for a while thanks!
