It’s been a few weeks since the Toshiba Thrive went on sale in the US, so it’s about time someone figured out how to root the device. Rooting an Android phone or tablet allows you to access system files and settings that would otherwise be unavailable. That means you can install apps that change the behavior of your device or allow you to perform actions that wouldn’t normally be supported. It’s also the first step toward replacing the software that comes with your device with a customized operating system that offers different features.
The process isn’t for beginners though. You’ll need to download and install the Android Software Developer Kit on your computer and make sure fastboot is working so that you can flash a custom recovery image.
If I haven’t already lost you, there are detailed instructions at the Thrive Forums and TabletROMs. You can download the Android SDK tools from Google.
The Toshiba Thrive is a 10 inch tablet running Google Android 3.1. It has a 1 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core processor and a 10 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display. But it’s most distinctive features are the array of full-sized USB and HDMI ports, a full-sized SD card slot, and a removable back cover which makes replacing the battery a snap.
