There are two updates Motorola promised when launching the XOOM tablet in February. First, the microSD card slot would eventually work. Second, the company would offer a free upgrade which would allow users to send in their 3G capable tablets to receive a 4G LTE modem.

The first promise is finally starting to come true. Today Motorola started rolling out a software update that, among other things, allows you to actually start using that long-dormant SD card slot on your tablet.

Now it looks like we might not have to wait much longer for the second promise. Wireless Goodness noticed that the FCC has approved the 4G LTE upgrade for Motorola’s tablet.

This doesn’t necessarily tell us when Motorola will start offering the upgrade to people who have purchased XOOM tablets — but at least one regulatory hurdle has been cleared.
