HP TouchPad

Today’s launch day for HP TouchPad tablet. It’s in stock at Amazon, Office Depot, B&H, J&R, and Best Buy. The tablet runs $499.99 with 16GB of storage or $599.99 with 32GB.

Both models feature 9.7 inch, 1024 x 768 pixel displays, a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual core processor, and the webOS 3.0 operating system.

The tablet has gotten mixed reviews. But if you’re willing to overlook sluggish performance and a relatively small number of apps, the tablet has some nice features including an excellent system for multitasking, a decent web browser, and big dreams: if you use the TouchPad and a Pre smartphone running webOS, the two will interact with one another to share web pages and other data and eventually you may be able to interact with PCs, printers, and other devices running the software as well.

In other tablet news, the Lenovo IdeaPad K1 10 inch Android tablet is up for pre-order at Amazon for $499.99. Lenovo’s tablet isn’t nearly as distinctive as HP’s. Like most other high profile tablets launching this year it features a 10.1 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display, NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and Android 3.x operating system. Lenovo may offer some custom software for the tablet though.

We’ve seen retail listings for the K1 before, but this is the first time a store has actually started taking pre-orders, so it may be an indication that Lenovo’s first Android tablet will be ready to ship in the US soon.

Update: In a completely unsurprising move, the Amazon pre-order page for the IdeaPad K1 has been removed.

  1. The tablet runs $499.99 with 16GB of storage or $599.99 with 16GB. ???

  2. So wanted a TouchPad, with  Pre3s for my wife and I so we can sync our calendars..Also wanted something that we could take with us when we are on photo excursions. Take the card out of the SLR and plop it into….what?  Not even a way to use the micro usb for a card reader.  Without this function it is an absolute no-go.  Liked the idea of HP having WebOs across many devices, always liked HP products. Have to look elsewhere for tablet/phones.  Really disappointed.

    1. To me, it only makes sense for consumers to support actual distributions of Linux (like Ubuntu) than it does to support Linux-based operating systems like Android or WebOS.  That said, WebOS is one of the best Linux-based operating systems around, and since neither WebOS nor Android is legitimately, fully open, I’d give the not to WebOS without hesitation, in no small part because of the company behind it.  If HP delivers on the vision of WebOS everywhere, then WebOS and Windows 8 will create some very exciting consumer opportunities in the world of proprietary consumer computing.
