Google users can already upload up to 1GB of pictures and videos to Picasa Web Albums for free. But as part of the rollout of the new Google+ social networking service this week Google has made it possible for anyone with a Google+ account to upload a nearly unlimited number of photos and videos.

You may have noticed the key word “nearly” in that last sentence though. Here’s the catch: Photos that are up to 2048 x 2048 pixels and videos that are up to 15 minutes long don’t count against the usual 1GB free storage limit. You can upload larger pictures, but if you upload them using Google+ they’ll automatically be resized. If you upload those larger images using Picasa Web Albums, they’ll count toward the 1GB limit.

Google is also letting people who aren’t beta testing Google+ upload more pictures for free. But those users only get to upload pictures up to 800 x 800 pixels for free. Anything larger will count against the 1GB limit. Everybody gets to upload as many 15 minute or shorter videos as they like though.

If you still need more space for your large photos or long videos, you can buy additional storage space from Google with prices starting at $5 per year for 20GB.

  1. I was unable to duplicate this behavior.
I uploaded 12MP files, they appeared as full size on Picasa Web and counting against my limits instead of being resized.
