Toshiba Thrive tablet available for pre-order for $430 and up

06/13/2011 at 8:47 AM by Brad Linder 7 Comments

Toshiba Thrive

The Toshiba Thrive 10 inch Android tablet is expected to start shipping on July 10th, but you can start placing pre-orders today. Amazon, Newegg, Office Depot, and Toshiba Direct are all taking orders.

For $429.99 you can get a tablet with 8GB of storage. A 16GB model will run you $479.99. And for $579.99 you can pick up the top-of-the-line 32GB model.

The Thrive has a 10.1 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel capacitive touchscreen display, a 1 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core processor, and runs Google Android 3.1 Honeycomb. But there are a few things that set the Thrive apart from most other tablets with those specs.

It has a full sized SD card slot and a full sized USB port, for instance. The back panel is removable, allowing you to customize the color of the tablet — and to replace the battery.

How are we so sure Toshiba won’t screw people with support and access to Marketplace like how the did with the Folio 100?

Buyers of the Folio are crying now cause their product is like a dead toy.

I rather buy an ipad. At least I know Apple updates it. Or even an Asus Transformer.

Is the USB port a USB host? Can I plug in a keyboard? Other things?

If not I don’t really see what the difference is in any of these Tegra2 based tablets.

I don’t think Toshiba has confirmed full host capabilities, but Android 3.1 does support USB peripherals such as a keyboard or mouse, and Toshiba *has* confirmed that you’ll be able to plug in a USB flash drive and use Toshiba’s Android file manager to copy files to and from removable storage.
