Imagination Technologies has announced that six partners have licensed its next-generation PowerVR Series6 graphics architecture. ST-Ericsson has announced plans to use the Series6 technology in its upcoming smartphone chips. Texas Instruments will incorporate it in new OMAP chips. And MediaTek is a third partner.
The company is remaining silent on the other three partners, but since Apple is currently using PowerVR graphics for the iPad and latest iPhone and iPod touch models, there’s a good chance that Apple is one of the three unnamed companies.
Of the companies that aren’t Apple, Texas Instruments is one of the more exciting licensees. The company’s chips show up in a range of phones and tablets including the recently launched BlackBerry PlayBook. With TI licensing the next-gen tech, it’s likely that we’ll see it in a number of future mobile devices.
Imagination hasn’t unveiled detailed specs for the new graphics core, but it will support up to DirectX 11 graphics and be able to deliver 350 million polygons per second.
