We’ve seen the Acer Iconia Tab A500 Android tablet rooted, patched with custom software, and unofficially updated to Android 3.1. But now it looks like Acer is working on an official software update for the tablet. A leaked copy is starting to make the rounds and a number of folks at the xda-developers forum have begun kicking the tires.
It’s likely that if you’re patient, Acer will soon push the software as an over-the-air update. If not, it looks like you can flash the software on an Acer tablet running Android 3.0 to update to Android 3.1. That means you’ll get better support for 3D and HD graphics, resizable home screen widgets, and support for up to 16 items in the recent apps menu.
You’ll probably want to read through the entire xda-developers thread before getting started. There are a number of ways to install the leaked update, and a handful of places to download the software.
