Kocan Agora Chromium laptop

Don’t want to wait until June 15th to get your hands on a Chromebook from Acer or Samsung? No problem. Starting next week you can pick up a laptop running Chromium OS from Australian consumer electronics company Kogan.

The laptop has an 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display, a 1.3 GHz Intel Celeron SU2300 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 30GB solid state disk, and 802.11b/g/n WiFi. It runs Google Chromium OS, which is the open source version of Chrome OS, and it will ship on June 7th, beating the first official Chromebooks by a little over a week.

Chromium OS doesn’t include all the features you get with a true Chrome OS laptop. Google is working directly with hardware companies including Samsung and Acer to ensure fast boot and resume speeds and built-in security features. You won’t necessarily get that from the Kogan laptop. But you will get a decent price. Kogan is charging $349 AUD for the laptop, which is about $371 US. That makes the notebook a little more expensive than the entry-level Acer Chromebook, but not as pricey as the upcoming Samsung model.
