The Asus UX21 is a new ultraportable laptop from Asus that’s easy to pass off as yet another MacBook Air clone. It’s ridiculously thin at the front, and not all that much thicker in the back where the battery and other electronics hang out. But while final pricing hasn’t been released, Asus has said the UX21 will sell for under $1000, which is where MacBook Air prices begin.

Asus UX21

Asus unveiled the laptop earlier this month, and then Intel held it up as an example of a new class of affordable ultraportable computers the chip maker wants to call “ultrabooks.”

I got a chance to spend a few minutes with the Asus UX21 the other night. It’s one thing to read that it weighs 2.4 pounds and measures 0.12 inches at its thinnest point and 0.67 inches at its thickets, but it’s another thing to hold it in your hands and feel just how light a laptop with an aluminum case, full sized keyboard, large touchpad, and a reasonably spacious 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display can be.

Overall I came away quite impressed with the design and build quality. We’ll have to wait until review units are available until we have anything to say about performance though. The laptop will feature a solid state disk and an Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processor.

  1. The body on this sounds a lot like the absolutely lovely Sony X series, though I believe that weighed less. (And packed only an Atom processor, but let’s not talk about that.)

  2. Now if they could get discrete level graphics into that tiny little chassis…  I know, Llano…  lol.

  3. haha they even put a bunch of writing on the back near the hinge like apple… whoa that is too much.
