CyanogenMod now (mostly) works on the Archos Gen8 tablets

Archos 70 running CyanogenMod

Last year Archos released a line of budget Android tablets with screens ranging in size from 2.8 inches to 10.1 inches. They run Google Android 2.2 and while they don’t ship with access to the Google Android Market, there are plenty of other ways to get apps for the tablets. It’s also not that hard to get unofficial access to the Android Market.

But what if you want more than that? What if you also want to run Android 2.3 Gingerbread and to get all the tweaks that come with a full-featured custom firmware like CyanogenMod?

Well, it turns out you can do that too. The process is a bit involved at the moment, and not everything works. Bluetooth isn’t supported, nor is hardware video acceleration or even the system suspend feature. But the CyangoenMod port for the Archos Gen8 tablets is still a work in progress. Hopefully some of those issues will eventually be resolved.

In the meantime, you can check out the video below from ArcTablet showing what it looks like when you do install CM7 on an Archos 70 tablet. You can find more details and step-by-step directions at ArcTablet.
