Archos 80

Archos unveiled two new tablets this week. The Archos Gen9 tablets will be the first from the company to run Google Android 3.1 Honeycomb — but they’ll also be the first Archos tablets to ship with access to the Android Market and the first to feature 1.5 GHz dual core TI OMAP4 processors. In other words, while Archos has built a name for itself by offering cheap alternatives to high-end tablets, these are pretty high-end tablets. They just don’t happen to cost very much.

The Archos 80 will have s tarting price of $280, while the Archos 101 will run $349 and up.

We got a good look at the tablets when Archos  unveiled product pages, press shots, and other information yesterday. But official product pages and spec sheets don’t tell you much about how a device looks and feels in real life. For that, we turn to YouTube, where a number of folks attending the launch event in France have posted hands-on videos.

Most of the videos are in French, but the fiddling with gadgets has a language all its own, so you can get a pretty good sense of what’s going on in the following videos even if you don’t speak, French, German, or whatever else is going on in the video.

Long story short: It looks like the new tablets are speedy, responsive to touch, and offer great multimedia and gaming experiences. They also feature glossy displays which don’t look great outdoors, and kick-stands which do make them easy to prop up on a table.

  1. Me want dat! Just can’t say NO to 250 GB of storage space + USB + plus low price.

  2. OMG, I might almost want one of these!  Especially that 8″ 4:3 set up.  I mostly want to review documents and take notes so having something approximately the same proportions of a piece of paper is kind of awesome.
