Sure, there’s no wrong way to hold an iPad, since it has wide viewing angles and the screen rotates automatically when you shift the tablet from landscape to portrait mode. But if you don’t like holding the 1.33 pound tablet in your arms while you’re in bed, there’s an awkward piece of hardware for that.

Japanese company Thanko has produced an iPad Flexible Arm, which basically looks like an adjustable lamp arm… except that at the end you get an iPad holder which hangs on tightly enough to let you float an iPad over your head while you’re lying down in bed.

I suppose this could come in handy if you want to watch a movie or read a book in bed without propping yourself up on a nice big fluffy pillow. But seriously, how lazy are you?

I mean, I suppose there are a handful of situations where something like this could come in handy. If you’re in a full body cast, for instance. I can’t imagine why anyone else would pay $61 for this thing though.

While the flexible arm is designed for the iPad, it should work with most tablets.

  1. holding the ipad for long times is annoying and could strain the wrist.
I can see a need for something like this so you dont’ need to prop the ipad/tablet on anything.

  2. I actually would like one of these — thanks for mentioning it. I have tried (not very successfully) to come up with ways to easily suspend a laptop over my head, for watching movies as I go to sleep. How many times have I see L.A. Confidential? Not sure. Tablets are better built for this purpose, and lighter.

  3. The articulating arm would be useful for the disabled or anyone who
can’t hold a slate/tablet at all, for a long time, or steadily.

Speaking of mounting, with the FridgePad mount and some bar code scanning and inventory control software, an iPad 2 could be used to reduce food waste in refrigerators

    1. The articulating arm could also be used by low vision users who need the device closer than the typical reading distance.

Such devices also leave people’s hands free.

Available in the US and for tablektop use, Kensington has an articulating arm, suitable for monitors (and not just tablets/slates).  When CRT monitors were still popular, several models of the tabletop arm were available.
