Last year a company called SeaMicro began offering servers based on 512 Intel Atom processors. But that was before dual core Atom processors were available. Now the company is selling the SM10000 server packed with 256 Intel Atom N570 dual core 1.66 GHz chips.

The company says the system uses about 75 percent less power than a typical server in its class and takes up less space. Of course 256 Atom processors are still going to use a fair amount of juice, so don’t expect netbook-like power consumption here. But the SM10000 takes a netbook-like approach by using low power processors to achieve tasks that are normally handled by chips that are more powerful and more expensive.

Tux-Planet reports that Mozilla recently acquired an SM10000 server to help distribute Firefox 4.

  1.  Microservers are becoming very important.  Obviously, when you’re looking at mission critical applications you always have to make sure that you’re getting the right features matched to the right application, like not omitting ECC memory when “data rot” could lead to catastrophe.  However, it’s now the norm that basic attributes like energy consumptions and thermals constrain which hardware is reached for in IT.  Intel’s new Xeon E3-1200 family of chips is going to give a nice shirt-and-tie make over to this whole segment of product.
