High contrast, low power E Ink displays are great if you want to read eBooks. But the top E Ink devices with 6 inch displays from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, and other companies all have one thing in common: They won’t fit comfortably into a tight pocket. That could change if a company called Polymer Vision has its way. The company is working on flexible E Ink displays which could be used in devices you fold or roll up to fit in your pocket.
A few weeks ago Polymer Vision showed some rendered images of a concept device called the Readius which could be folded up into the size of a cellphone or unfolded for use as a tablet. Now the company is showing a demo of a 6 inch E Ink screen that can be rolled or unrolled as many as 25,000 times. You can check it out in the video after the break.
The 6 inch rollable display has an 800 x 600 pixel resolution, which is about the same as the resolution for other 6 inch E Ink displays. As you can see in the video, the screen can display static images or refresh the screen just like similar displays. The key difference is that it can be rolled and unrolled over and over again.
There’s no word on if or when we might see actual products using this technology.
Update: Now there’s word… and the word is never.
