As expected, Gazelle has launched a storefront for used Apple iPads. Prices start at $329.99 for an iPad with 16GB of storage and WiFi. A top of the line 64GB iPad with 3G will run you $479.99.

The company has been been buying up used iPads and other gadgets  for a while, but up until recently Gazelle was partnering with bigger stores such as Wal-mart to sell used electronics. But Gazelle collected a huge number of first generation iPads when the iPad 2 was released, as customers tried to get a few bucks to put toward the purchase of a new model.

With more than 15,000 iPads in stock, Gazelle decided to start selling directly to consumers.

The iPads are all previously owned and may have some scratches or other wear and tear, but Gazelle lets you return the iPad within 32 days if there are any problems.

The original iPad has a 9.7 inch, 1024 x 768 pixel IPS display and an Apple A4 processor. It’s not quite as fast or as slim as the iPad 2, and it doesn’t have cameras. But most iPad apps will run just as well on the original iPad as the new model — except for apps that require a camera. Eventually we may start to see apps that only work with the new dual core processor in the iPad 2, but I haven’t really seen any apps with that limitation yet, which makes the used first-generation iPad look like a pretty good deal for now.

  1. I rather pay an extra $20 for the new case, battery and 1 year warranty from the Apple store (see iPad refurbished unit). Not a slick deal, IMO.

    1. I can’t agree with the idea of buying an iPad, but I can agree with your thoughts. People really should be careful with devices like these. They’re so closely tied to Apple that the few bucks that they might save by cutting Apple out of the loop is nothing compared to the amount of money that you end up wasting when the whole device becomes unusable.

Apple is in total control of the iPad’s lifecycle, and it’s pretty dangerous to try and get around that. The used and refurbished market has always been a favorite of people who are looking for a cheap Mac OS X machine to put Linux on. Once a computer hits these markets, prices are pretty cheap because Apple has already been paid once (via the first purchasers) for their software, which is all they’re looking for on computers like those. Buying a used Mac is like buying a used car. It’s as if you are buying a piece of third-party subsidized hardware right from the ODM that actually designs and builds the computers that Apple bundles with its software. However, there’s no equivalent opportunity for iOS devices to find a more useful second-home through an upgrade to non-Apple software. Thus, I can’t see why any sane person would bother buying what is little more than a discarded shell that was designed to be defective and obsolete in compliance with an orderly and reliable products release cycles. Unlike a Mac, these products have a very short “shelf life”, and this is more like buying a pre-chewed sandwiches than it is like buying a pre-driven car. At the very least, buy a sandwich that somebody brought back to the counter that the restaurant doesn’t mind selling at a discounted price.
