Asus working on Android 3.1, Windows 7 Pro updates to its tablet lineup

05/13/2011 at 10:48 AM by Brad Linder 5 Comments

Asus currently offers a 10 inch tablet running Android 3.0 called the Eee Pad Transformer, and a 12 inch tablet running Windows 7 Home Premium called the Eee Slate EP121. It looks like the company’s Android tablet should soon receive an update bringing Android 3.1, while the Windows tablet will get a new sibling called the Eee Slate B121 which will run Windows 7 Professional.

The folks at French site Blogee received an image of the Transformer running Android 3.1. It looks like this is just a test build for now, but it shows that Asus has received the source code for the operating system from Google and is working to bring the new OS to Eee Pad Transformer users.

Google Android 3.1 brings improved support for hardware graphics acceleration, new scrollable home screen widgets, and an improved Recent Apps tasks switcher, among other things.

There’s not much information about the new Eee Slate B121 yet, but Notebook Italia found a support page for the new tablet.

The Eee Slate EP121 has a 12.1 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display, an Intel Core i5 processor, and up to 64GB of storage space thanks to a solid state disk. The tablet supports finger input or the use of a digital pen, thanks to a capacitive touchscreen display and an active digitizer. It’s likely that the EB121 will have similar features, but the Windows 7 Professional operating system may indicate that the new tablet is geared at business users and it may include additional premium software or hardware features.

The EB121 appears to be the 12″ version of the Eee PC T101mt, at least in software:

Uses the same Touch Gate software (The EP121 doesn’t have it).

I’m not sure how much we can read into the software on that page… there’s also mention of Windows XP, but I doubt Asus will actually ship this tablet with the 10 year old operating system.

On the other hand, some businesses haven’t upgraded, so if it’s a business tablet… maybe they will?

Ah, was ready to order the EP121 here in the UK but might wait and see what this Eee Slate EB121 has to offer. Maybe its a quick fix on all the failings the EP121 currently has.
