LG builds a lot of devices with ARM-based chips, ranging from smartphones and tablets to televisions and set-top boxes. So it’s not a huge surprise that the company is looking at building its own chips. LG and ARM have entered a licensing agreement what will allow the consumer electronics company to build chips using ARM technology.

It’s described as a “comprehensive license,” covering ARM’s current Cortex A-9 chips and upcoming Cortex-A15 chips as well as the company’s Mali graphics core designs.

LG wouldn’t be the first consumer electronics company to build its own ARM-based chips. Apple and Samsung also license ARM technology to build chips for their own devices. Meanwhile, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments offer chips used in a wide range of devices.

It’s not clear yet exactly what kind of chips LG is thinking of building or what devices they’ll power.
