Archos has released a software update for its Gen8 line of tablets including the Archos 28, Archos 32, Archos 43, Archos 70, and Archos 101. The update includes a new YouTube applications, improved media apps, and higher quality 720p video recording on devices with HD cameras.
But the most impressive update is a feature which lets you control your Archos Gen8 tablet using an Android app running on your smartphone. Basically, the Archos Remote Control app lets you control media playback on an Archos tablet by transmitting signals over your home WiFi network. Since the top of the line Archos Gen8 tablets have HDMI ports, that means you can plug a tablet into your big screen TV and sit back on your couch with your phone to watch movies or listen to music from your tablet.
The software update also features some bug fixes and improvements that should make it easier to stream content over a home network.
The Archos Gen8 tablets were released late last year. They have screens ranging in size from 2.8 inches to 10.1 inches, with the handheld models serving as portable media players with resistive touchscreen displays that can also run some Android apps. The larger models have higher resolution capacitive touchscreen displays, faster processors, and support for HD video playback.
You can get Archos software update version 2.3.20 from the Archos support page. The Archos Remote Control app is available from the Android Market.
