When Jolicloud originally hit the scene, the operating system was designed to blur the lines between desktop and web apps on low power netbooks. But I always found the “cloud” part of the name to be a bit silly, since basically the operating system just let you install native Ubuntu Linux apps or shortcuts for launching web apps in a web browser. You can do pretty much the same thing by saving a bookmark to your desktop in any operating system. Recently, though, Jolicloud has been taking some interesting steps toward earning its “cloud” badge.

When Joli OS 1.2 was launched, for instance, added support for Dropbox integration, letting you access file stored online in your Dropbox account just as quickly using the Joli OS file browser as any file stored on your desktop.

Now Jolicloud has also launched Google Docs integration, letting users view text, spreadsheet, and presentation documents stored in their Google Docs account using the Joli OS file browser. You can also preview and edit any files stored in your account, and view other, non-document files uploaded to your account.

The service should be available for all users now, but you’ll need to link your Jolicloud account to Google Docs to use the new feature. You can find out how at the Jolicloud blog.

  1. Jolicloud is awesome, they have changed the name now to Joli OS 1.2 and added some improvements. I have installed this OS on 2 laptops and one desktop. It is amazingly fast and just works very well. I really like that you can make your own apps for it and share them with your friends.
