It’s been a few months since we’ve heard anything about the upcoming Cisco Cius tablet, but Wireless Goodness spotted an FCC listing for the enterprise-friendly Android tablet yesterday. That’s a pretty good indication that Cisco plans to bring the device to market in the coming months.
The FCC page doesn’t show us all that much about the tablet, but it does show that the Cisco Cius is approved for 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth. There’s no word on 3G.
Interestingly, the documents weren’t filed by Cisco. Instead tablet maker OpenPeak seems to be the manufacturer. When I caught up with OpenPeak at CES in January, the company did say that it was working as a white box device maker with some big name brands. Now I guess we know the name of at least one of those brands.
In fact, if you look at the tablets OpenPeak was showing off at CES and then look at the concept images Cisco has been showing off, it looks likely that OpenPeak has been behind the Cius tablet since day one. The OpenPeak Tablet and the Cicsco Cius have similar deigns with 7 inch displays, big black borders around the screen, and a series of buttons below the display.
On the other hand, I didn’t get the sense that OpenPeak’s tablets would be particularly expensive, while the last I heard, a Cisco Cius tablet could run as much as $1000 due to tight integration with Cisco’s enterprise software.
It’s hard to choose from iPad 2, Xoom, TouchPad and Cius. We can classify these tablet to 7-inch and 10.1-inch, as It’s strange that a businessmen use a bigger tablet to make videoconferencing and reading email, plus, iPad 2 is aimed at main stream users for their entertainment.
