French company Archos has been making portable media players for more than 10 years, but in the last few years the company has made a name for itself in the low cost Android tablet space. In a recent financial results document, the company outlined plans for its next generation of Android tablets.

The Archos Gen 9 tablets will use 1.6 GHz dual core ARM Cortex A9 chips. Archos also plans to offer its first tablets with 3G mobile broadband connectivity in 2011.

Like the company’s current offerings, the Gen 9 devices will have low cost designs featuring plastic cases over a stainless steel frame, and a choice of hard drives or solid state disks for storage.

Archos will also continue to push the Arnova brand for cheaper, “entry level” tablets which will be sold both under their own brand name and as white-label devices for other companies to rebrand and sell under different names. Archos plans to launch 6 new Arnova products this summer.

In the financial results document, the company explains that while Apple, Asus, HP, Samsung, and others will fight for dominance in the premium tablet market, Archos is well positioned to have a growing impact in the low price tablet space, with Android powered systems selling for between 100€ and 400€ (about $140 to $566 US).

  1. Gustave that is Exactly me i’m thinking about buying a 43 but having seocnd thoughts that the gen 9 will be better and i will regret buing please anyone awnser mine and Gustaves Question.

  2. Archos always looks like a winner on paper, but when you actually use the product, you see why they are the leader in cheap tablets. Sub par build quality, LCD panels with horrible viewing angles, etc.
There’s a reason why archos is never mentioned with the apple, samsung, htc, motorola and hp; Quality

  3. I have an Archos 5IT Android tablet that they released in 2009 when Android was still at cupcake (1.5). They have been the true innovators in the tablet space.

  4. “with Android powered systems selling for between 100€ and 400€ (about $140 to $566 US)”

When you convert the Euro prices to $, remember that Europe has about 20% taxes, thus 100 euros = $100 in MSRP retail pricing. So it means Archos leads the $100-$400 pricing range not $140-$566.

    1. Charbax you are everywhere these tablets are!
I have a question since I know you’re such a hardcore Archos fan. I am really considering getting an Archos 43 at the end of the month because of the wonderful things it does. But I am worried that I will have buyer’s remorse the second the new lineup has more details and more concrete prices. Keep in mind I am only interested in something that is highly portable (so the 5″ is probably the only new one I would be interested in).
Do you think the features will all be there for the new 5″? Or will they make it the “worst of the bunch” kind of like how the gen8’s 28 and 32 are not quite up to par with the 43, 70, and 101?

Basically do you see any reason to wait for generation 9?

  5. Archos sells out quickly most places they have distribution. I think in France they sell out very very quickly and are the #1 selling tablet below 400 euros. . . by a huge margin.

They do need a higher end line, though. Good to see them pushing that. I hope they make a vanilla Android version and push updates quickly–that would be a huge hit. It would also be nice to see them make something like the Asus Eee Pad Transformer tablet/netbook hybrid.

One thing people should realize is, Archos has been making tablets for a very long time. When Apple says others are copying them that’s just BS because Apple copied the Archos tablet–just have a look back in time at their tablets. Archos is just a small company and has never been able to have the marketing that Apple does. So, thanks to Apple we have the tablet market all hyped up but they did NOT create the tablet or pad nor innovate with their form factor whatsoever–Archos has been ahead of them for years. But apple will try to take the credit just like they did with the GUI (Xerox), MP3 player (Kane Kramer, Audio Highway), iPhone (it only added multi-touch to what was already in the market) and now iPad–they are masters at claiming others IP and convincing their fans they originated it.

  6. I would like to thank them for continuing to produce media devices with hard drives. There will always be a market for people who want to carry their entire music collection (or large amounts of video) on their player of choice, not simply on a desktop or laptop that constantly has to be synchronized with a solid-state player to replace its limited contents.

With the rumor that Apple will drop its iPod classic this year, Archos’ hard drive devices will be the only portable hard-drive media option.

  7. Archos has my full respect. Thank you for giving us cheap and low prices and putting those arrogant branded tablet manufacturers in their place.

Only problem is that in Asia, you have crap distribution and yet, there is a huge following and potential buyers. Do concentrate on the Asian market and not just the US
