One of the things Apple has going for its tablets and smartphones is a strong infrastructure thanks to the iTunes App Store, video and music stores, and iBooks digital book store. Buy an iPad, and whether you have Mac or not, you know you can easily get plenty of content to consume on the tablet. If you have a Mac or an Apple TV, you can take things even further by streaming content to and from your iOS device.

A number of other hardware makers are trying to do something similar, launching their own music or video stores, or tying into existing services such as Amazon MP3. But Samsung plans to go a step further by allowing those who buy a new Samsung tablet or phone and a Samsung Smart TV to stream live video from the TV to the mobile device.

Pocket Lint reports that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Android tablet and the Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone will be the first two devices to support the feature, turning those devices into portable TV sets that you can use around the house thanks to the secondary TV tuner built into Samsung’s Smart TVs. That means one member of your household will be able to watch a show on TV while you watch something else on your tablet in another room.

You’ll need one of Samsung’s upcoming D7000 or D8000 televisions to use the service. So basically none of the necessary equipment is available yet. But Samsung is making a compelling case for why you might want to make sure your TV, phone, and tablet are all from the same company. I suspect other companies (*cough* Sony *cough*) will do the same soon enough.

  1. Love streaming my TV to my phone and tablet! As a DISH customer/employee I use the TV Everywhere app, which, unlike Comcast’s version, actually works for live TV even when I’m NOT at home, which I think is a huge and crippling setback for Comcast’s customers, they have to be within their personal wifi network for the Live TV streaming to work.
