The Barnes & Noble NOOKcolor eBook Reader continues to prove popular with hackers looking for cheap Android tablets. Out of the box the NOOKcolor runs Android 2.1 with a custom user interface designed for purchasing and reading books and magazines. But with a little tweaking you can enable support for all sorts of other Android apps, turning the NOOKcolor into a general purpose tablet for surfing the web, watching videos, playing music or games, or just about anything else.
One NOOKcolor owner decided to turn the tablet into a sort of carputer by holding it in place in his car with a bungee cord. He can use it to listen to music on the go, or tether it via WiFi to his smartphone to get online and check Facebook, surf the web or perform other activities that I really hope he only does when the car is stopped.
Unfortunately the NOOKcolor doesn’t have its own 3G or GPS radios, so the only way to use the tablet as a GPS received is by tethering it to a phone. While the NOOKcolor does have Bluetooth, the software used to gain root access to the tablet doesn’t yet support Bluetooth, which means you’ll need an audio cable to connect the tablet to a car stereo system.
You can check out the NOOKcolor carputer in action in the video after the break.
