Remember back when you thought $800 was way too much to pay for the upcoming Motorola XOOM Android tablet? How about $1200. Best Buy has put up a page promising that the tablet will be available for pre-order on Thursday. But if you scroll down to the bottom of the page, there’s a listing for the tablet which says it wil be available in-stores for a whopping $1199.99.

It’s possible that this is just a placeholder page and that the price could change. Or it could be a mistake. Or, I don’t know, maybe the price includes a solid gold carrying case.

But while the price seems a bit spectacular, the specs are pretty much what we’ve come to expect: a 10 inch tablet with Google Android 3.0, a 10.1 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display, 1 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core processor, 5MP camera, 1GB of RAM and a 32GB solid state drive. The tablet supports 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, and 3G mobile broadband.

Update: Engadget’s sources say this is just a placeholder. I guess we’ll find out later this week if/when the tablet goes up for pre-order on the 17th as expected.

Update 2: Best Buy has removed the page. Hopefully when it comes back online the price will be a bit more reasonable.

  1. I just bought a color Nook and rooted it. A custom launcher and soft keys makes it a dandy tablet for$ 250. You can even run a hack of honeycomb on it.

  2. Well it is Best Buy, same store that does things like over charges for HDMI cables and charges over a hundred just for the privilege of calibrating an already calibrated television, etc.

So either price error, or Geek Squad tax, or they think they’re going to have a monopoly on the early release of sold units.

  3. Its already been confirmed to just be a placeholder. The price is still only the ridiculous amount of $799. May want to update the article.

  4. Motorola, Best Buy, and Verizon needs to rethink this or they will be eating these things for a long time to come.

  5. No wonder why apple continue to florish when the android marketers are this retarded….

  6. I was seriously considering buying one even though I thought $799 a little to high priced. At $1199, they can keep it. Seriously, is Motorola insane? Who is going to buy one at that price?
