The Motorola XOOM is already one of the fastest Android tablets on the market thanks to a speedy 1 GHz dual core NVIDIA Tegra processor with support for 3D graphics acceleration and HD video output. But some people just like to push the limits. The developer of the SetCPU app for Android has managed to use the app to overclock the XOOM to run at 1.2 GHz.

After overclocking, the tablet scores 40mflops on the Linpack benchmark — but Linpack is designed to test performance of single core chips, so that’s probably not the best measure of speed in this case.

The XOOM optimized version of SetCPU should be available for download soon, but it won’t work properly on other phones or tablet with NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor since they use different drivers.

Update: And now xda-developers forum member coolbh3000 has managed to overclock the XOOM to 1.5 GHz. Video after the break.

  1. why would u even need to overclock it? you arent running Crysis 2 on this thing!
you’re just looking an a bunch of youtube vids, checking email and facebook.

    1. Flash performance for one… and I wouldn’t be so quick on dismissing the gaming, already game developers are starting to take advantage of the Tegra2’s increased graphical performance and it won’t be long before they start pushing the limits.

Especially with the Tegra3, OMAP5, and other more powerful ARM solutions coming out by next year…

      1. you’re ridiculous CyberGusa.
the only games that these android tablets r getting are old iphone ports, and games that dont really need that much horsepower. Do you really need 1.5Ghz to run Fruit NInja, Angry Birds and Ant Smasher?
Android isn’t a gaming platform, no developers are making games for android right now. Not alone high performance games.that require tegra 2 dual core processors.

        1. You’re obviously not keeping up with the what’s being developed…

The Sony Ericsson Zeus is an Android PSP phone that will allow the playing of PS1 games.

The still in development PSP2 is reported to be working with Android and possibly offer PS3 level gaming performance on the go.

Qualcomm has already demonstrated some upcoming games on its newest gen ARM processors to show off the increased graphical performance, which they claim is twice the Tegra2’s.

And all that is not factoring the fact MS is going to make Windows 8 work on ARM by either end of this year or sometime next year for options beyond just the next few versions of Android. While many are already promising 1.2GHz to over 2GHz, with dual to quad cores, ARM processors from this year to next.

Fact is the mobile market is rapidly growing right now at a rate far faster than any other part of the market, and over clocking is just something to do to help keep up. Otherwise we’d have to buy a new tablets every couple of months to keep up at the rate they’re going now.

Really, you may not have seen much advancement until now since ARM processors are only now reaching the point they can properly run anything more powerful than Android or iOS without being sluggish, but Android 3.0 on up will start taking advantage of that performance to give a better tablet experience and you shouldn’t compare to just what has been out last year to what is coming this year and next!

    2. Actually, you are ridiculous. One overclocks because one can. There’s no other reason and no other reason needed.

  2. The Xoom, now with 2.4GHz processing power!

Give the Android community devs a month and they will have the Xoom zipping along. . . now if Moto and some of these other hardware manufacturers could just optimize Android as well as the community devs do?!?!?

    1. it does support video out via the hdmi port without the dock as shown in this video review

        1. Thanks for the link – clears this up (yes, you can mirror with mini HDMI to mini HDMI on a HDTV
