Archos currently offers a whole line of Android powered media players and internet tablets with screen sizes ranging from 2.8 inches to 10.1 inches. But the folks at Russian site The eBook have gotten their hands on a previously unannounced Archos tablet with an 8 inch screen.

The Archos Arnova A80KSC stands out from the crowd by using a 4:3 aspect ratio for the display instead of the 16:9 ratio that seems to be all the rage these days. While 16:9 screens are great for watching widescreen video, 4:3 tends to be better for reading eBooks and viewing web pages.

The tablet will reportedly be announced in March. All we really know about it at the moment is that it has an 8 inch matte display, runs Google Android, has a metal case, and weighs about 1.1 pounds.

We should know more about the hardware and software next month.

Update: Detailed specs are now available. The tablet has an 800 x 600 pixel matte display, a 311 MHz ARM-based CPU, and 8GB of storage. It runs Android 1.5. Clearly this is not a bleeding edge device, but it may make a decent cheap device for reading eBooks and surfing the web.

  1. If you want to know the specs, just go to prestigioplaza.com and check out their 8″ Android tablet. Archos built it for them with the agreement that they can use the design with their own branding. I just hope Archos boosts it up to 2.2 or 2.3 (3.0 is unlikely) and a full 1ghz dual core (instead of the 700mhz dual core in the prestigio) in their version, then they might have something worth while.
