Apple has scheduled an event for March 2nd, and according to Kara Swisher at All Things D, the company will likely unveil the second generation iPad at the event.

The iPad has been a runaway success for Apple since its introduction almost a year ago. The company sold close to 15 million iPads last year, making it likely the most successful consumer tablet ever to hit the market. While dozens of companies are scrambling to compete in the tablet space with devices running Android, webOS, BlackBerry, or other software, Apple is getting ready to launch its next-gen tablet.

I’ve seen a lot of rumors about the iPad 2 over the last few months. Some people seem to think it will have a retina display (with a ridiculously high resolution), while others are certain it will have front and rear-facing cameras, a multi-core chip, Light Peak ports, and support for multiple 3G mobile broadband networks.

I’m just glad we’ll be able to put an end to the rumors in a couple of weeks when the official specs are announced. You know, unless it turns out the March 2nd event doesn’t herald the launch of the iPad 2. That’s just a rumor for now.
