A few days ago we received confirmation that Sharp plans to offer its 5 and 10 inch Galapagos tablets in the US. Today the company is one step closer, as documents have been filed with the FCC for at least one of those tablets.
There are a few photos of a Galapagos tablet, or the EB-WX1GJ as it’s known for FCC purposes. You can take a gander at the tablet or peek under the hood. If you look at the Test setup Photos (SAR) link from the FCC web site, you can even see a few images of the tablet’s software.
While the Galapagos tablets run Google Android, they have a custom user interface designed by Sharp and the company is positioning them as eReaders and media devices rather than general purpose Android tablets. The company has worked out deals with Japanese content publishers to make books, Manga, and other content available and hopes to do the same with US publishers as well.
